Some thoughts on Persian carpets which give light to some interesting lessons for the application of NLP

"Plasterer", "Craftsman" or "Master"?

Persian Carpets

Recently I have become interested in Persian carpets. The first thing about them is that it's hard to tell the difference between a fake and a genuine Persian carpet unless you really know what you are looking for - you have to train with an expert to really know about them. Just because a manufacturer has been around for a long time it doesn't mean the manufacturer is any good.

Another thing about Persian carpets is that the patterns and the colours and the kinds of knots they use have geographic styles. Each person or family who works on one has a unique style, but no two of those carpets will ever be the same. Each one is a work of art in itself; there will never, ever, ever be a duplication of the exact pattern. It is the scale and the attention to detail in the work that gives the quality.

There is both a depth and a quality of experience in them that you could just stick one on the floor and walk over it everyday completely unaware that you are walking over a work of art created by a master craftsman. But if you recognise it, you can add tremendous quality to your life.

Questions and Considerations

Regarding your application of NLP: How conscious are you of the unique characteristics and demands of each session with a client? Are you a 'plasterer', a 'craftsman' or a 'master' and how do you know the difference between them?

Each person you meet is a one off, even if there are resemblances to others. You never see the same problem or person twice.

Some of the greatest beauty and most wondrous resources may be right there at your feet. What have you been ignoring that is there before you?
